| Caring for Young Ears |
| For the last few years, PHPSM has scored low in the number of children who were treated appropriately for upper respiratory infections (URI), also known as a cold when compared to other health plans. This means that too many of our children were being prescribed an antibiotic when diagnosed with an URI or cold, which will most often clear up on its own. Because most ear infections start with a simple URI or flu PHPSM implemented the Caring for Young Ears initiative. The initiative is simple. Once a year, most often in the fall, all parents of children 0-4 years of age receive an informational mailing about ear infections and the best treatment for them. In many cases, they are caused by a simple cold or the flu so the information starts with how to prevent a cold. PHPSM hopes that this little bit of information will be helpful when you are trying to best care for your little ones. |
